Hmmm.. I'm doubtful at first. But upon stumbling upon this article, I felt kinda relieved and HOPEFUL.
The article specified four pointers to help the relationship to last, but I narrowed it down to three, since I find one of the pointers kinda.. IRRELEVANT. Here it is:
1. AGREE TO AN END.
"Before you decide to jump headfirst into long-distance relationships, you should first agree on an end goal with your partner -- a specific time, be it six months or a year, when the separation is going to end."
Hmmm.. Of course, NO ONE waits forever. And it's just right for us to know if we are waiting for SOMETHING or else, it can be pretty tiring. Not to mention, EXASPERATING!
2. SCHEDULE COMMUNICATION.
"The quality and quantity of communication with your woman will need to increase substantially when you embark on long-distance relationships."
Key to bridging the gap: COMMUNICATION! It is already given that you are far... way far from each other. So it is but right to talk to each other. QUALITY CONVERSATION.
3. RAISE YOUR TRUST LEVEL.
"When living a great deal of your lives away from each other in a long distance relationship it’s natural that you develop some of your once-laudable independent tendencies."
Hmmmm.. This is where it gets pretty tricky. TEMPTATION is indeed, EVERYWHERE. We tend to gets easily jealous, not to mention paranoid, emphasis on that last word. PARANOIA. It can make or break a relationship. Most of the time, a poison that destroys the relationship, since you are far from each other, many thoughts on what each other are doing and up to fill your mind, hence paranoia attacks.
What to do: TRUST. Easy to say but HARD to do. But as the saying goes, trust is the foundation of a relationship.
BOTTOM LINE: When it comes to long-distance relationships the name of the game is prioritizing what’s important to the both of you. If it’s family or a relationship that you find occupying the top spot, great, but you’ll have to sacrifice your career a little bit. If you are both career-oriented people and can put your relationship on the back burner for a while, then a long-distance relationship may be for you. It’s all about weighing the ups and downs associated with what you want from your life.
